What Is a Healthy BMI and What the Number Really Means

The nurse said 'your BMI is 27' and I smiled awkwardly. Here's what that number actually tells you — and what it doesn't.

Annual health check at office. Height, weight, blood pressure, then the nurse says "BMI 27.2 — overweight." I used to think BMI was some secret doctor code. It's not. It's just your weight relative to height — and it's useful, but only partly.

How BMI is calculated

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

Example: 70 kg, 170 cm tall → height 1.7 m → 70 ÷ (1.7×1.7) = 24.2 (normal range).

Try our BMI calculator — takes ten seconds.

Standard categories (WHO)

  • Below 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9 — Normal
  • 25 – 29.9 — Overweight
  • 30+ — Obese

What "healthy" really means

Healthy isn't just one number. It's energy, sleep, blood sugar, lipids, waist size, family history. BMI is a screening tool — like a rough filter, not a full health report.

Why Indians sometimes debate the cut-offs

Some health bodies suggest Indians may face diabetes and heart risk at lower BMI than Western averages. Waist circumference matters — belly fat is a bigger red flag than BMI alone for many of us.

So if you're 24.9 BMI but waist is 98 cm, talk to a doctor. If you're 26 BMI but gym-strong with normal lipids, context matters.

BMI lies sometimes

Athletes: Muscle weighs more than fat. A fit cricketer can show "overweight" on BMI.

Older adults: Losing muscle with age — BMI "normal" but less muscle, more fat inside.

Pregnancy: BMI charts don't apply.

Healthy weight range for your height

For 170 cm, normal BMI range 18.5–24.9 means roughly 53–72 kg. That's your "mathematical" band — not a fashion target.

What to do with your number

Underweight: check nutrition, thyroid, stress.

Overweight: small sustainable habits — walk after dinner, protein at breakfast, less sugary drinks. Crash diets bounce back.

Obese: medical support helps — dietitian, structured plan, rule out sleep apnea.

BMI + one more measurement

Measure waist at navel level. Men often aim under 90 cm, women under 80 cm as rough guides (doctor may adjust). Pair with BMI for clearer picture.

Honestly?

BMI won't tell you if you're "good looking." It won't measure willpower. It's one number from height and weight. Use it as a starting conversation with yourself and your doctor — not as a verdict.

Waist-to-height ratio — quick extra check

Divide waist (cm) by height (cm). Above 0.5 for many adults suggests higher metabolic risk even if BMI looks "okay." Takes thirty seconds with a measuring tape.

BMI for Indian diets and lifestyle

We're not wrong for eating rice — we're human. BMI doesn't know if you walk 8,000 steps daily or sit in cab-to-desk life. Pair BMI with movement and strength training. Two people at BMI 26 can have very different health profiles.

Kids and teens

Don't use adult BMI charts for children. Paediatric growth percentiles exist for a reason. This article and calculator target adults 18+.

When to see a doctor regardless of BMI

Shortness of breath, sudden weight change, chest pain, extreme fatigue — don't wait for BMI to tell you. BMI is screening; symptoms trump spreadsheets.

Setting a realistic target

If you're 27 BMI aiming for 24, that's often 6–10 kg for average height — months of habit, not a detox week. Track waist and energy, not just scale. Use our calculator monthly as one data point among many.
